Any recommendations for shore diving in Cozumel or stick to the boat dives?
I think the consensus is that boat diving is the way to do Cozumel. The big reefs lie a distance offshore, and the currents make anything offshore difficult to dive FROM shore.
We did some shore diving off the Aldora dock; most of it was shallow eelgrass. We did find some interesting things in the grass, and on the sea wall, but it wouldn't have merited a trip to Cozumel to see those things.

I don't know about the rest of the Island, but the "shore diving" off of the Americana Resort (south side of the island) wasn't worth if for me personally. There just wasn't much to see, but on the upside swimming back towards the dock against the current provided a decent workout. We did one shore dive, and decided to stick to the boat from then on.
Out in front of the Casa Del Mar are lots of rock outcroppings, small walls and a drop off a ways out. Lots of fish, lobster and we only saw the toadfish there ... no place else on any other dives. Don't go just for shore dives, but don't count them out either!
I had a good time shore diving out front of Blue Angel. The stingray pen has some rocks just outside it, and there is quite a bit of fish life, eels, urchins, etc.. The current runs (usually*) S-N, and you can enter at Papa Hogs or somewhere else down the road and drift to Blue Angel for the exit. So long as you are at about 18-22 feet of depth, you can't miss the fence of the pen. Turn right after you pass it.
