Set your DVR for Feb 9th, Nova - Extreme Cave Diving

Next week (Feb 9th) Nova will be begin airing a new episode titled "Extreme Cave Diving" on PBS. This show looks first rate and I am looking forward to it.

Anyone here dove the blue holes of the Bahamas?

Can someone help explain the topology of a blue hole? Are the holes straight down, like a giant well? Or do they twist and turn like the caves in FL and Mexico? Or perhaps a bit of both?

Check with Brian Kakuk. I believe he posts on DMX if I am not mistaken. I believe he is in the film you reference above. Probably the most knowledgeable person on this subject but Heather and Benthic can probably chime in as well.

Pick up Sheck Exley's Caverns Measureless to Man and Robert Burgess' The Cave Divers. They both have several excellent chapters about diving the caves and blue holes of the Bahamas.
I'm also known as Robert Phillips on that other board.

Rebreathers are something that we have to go to in order to dive the way we want to dive. They are not something we go to for any other reason.

Looking at my iPhone app, it looks like DirectTV is airing it on PBS (channel 379), at 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm (Pacific) on Tuesday 2/9.

For our Satellite-impaired friends, it looks like you can watch it online starting 2/10: http://video.pbs.org/video/1398380542/

Damn, I'm paying for their most expensive tier + HD and I'm not authorized to view or record the channel. WTF?

Wow! In this part of the country you don't even need cable to get PBS.
400 dives logged last year 2008
417 dives logged this year 2009 and counting

Channel 379 is not HD anyway.

PBS OTA signal broadcasts high bitrate 1080i HD on channel 28, where it's airing at 8pm on the 9th. That's where I'll be recording it.

Do you get local OTA channels?

Yep, I get 28 in Hi-Def. I didn't actually watch TV for 12 years until last month I signed up for DirectTV to accompany a nice shiny new 48" LED LCD TV; so I'm new to all the channels. I mostly just watch HIST and HINT. It's unter the KCET umbrella, tho, not PBS. Who cares, I get my NOVA on the 9th.

KCET is a PBS channel. We're talking about the same thing.

    Looking forward to the 9th.

It looks like our San Diego PBS will be showing it on Feb 9th (Tues) at 8pm in both std and HD (ch711). Sorry for starting the thread with the date as the 10th.

Could I get some moderator help to change the thread title to Feb 9th? Thnx
