Honey, they get MUCH smaller than that. Often you find them about 1/2 the size of a pea... that's WITH mask magnification. The BIGGEST one I've seen was about the size of a golfball... a little flourescent pink golfball with fins and the cutest face you've ever seen.

Are these any relation to frogfish?

I don't believe they're related at all... Other than being funny looking fish that divers love.

Went back for a reprise this evening. Got there a bit earlier, and noticed that I didn't spot any lumpies during the first half of the dive. Then ... when it got good and dark ... I found six of 'em. Not sure if it was that they were hiding till dark or just that the contrast between the dark background and my dive light made 'em easier to spot. Anyway, not nearly as exciting a dive as last night ... but I did put the macro lens to good use ...

I love the green coloration on some of the lumpsuckers. It's too cold to dive. I'd rather look at your pictures!

Regarding Sounders comments on size...I've only seen the 1/2 pea sized ones while diving. At the Aquarium I've seen grape sized ones. I'd love to see one of the golf ball sized ones in the wild....preferable in green!

Last winter I was finding the golf-ball size ones regularly down in the bottle field. The ones I'm finding this week are typically between pea and grape size. That green one above is in the grape size. And getting a point-n-shoot camera to focus on 'em ... especially while they're moving around in eel grass beds ... is proving to be a challenge. I took maybe 80 pictures last night ... and got five keepers.

Had just silly amounts of fun with Casey O last night at the 'Dond. We found no fewer than 15 lumpsuckers ... he was literally finding them faster than I could shoot them! At one poiint I was taking a picture of a little baby dogfish (aka "puppyfish") when he signals to get my attention. When I waved off his signal, he signaled more frantically. I looked to make sure he wasn't gagging on an empty tank, and then resumed my task of teaching the little puppyfish how to roll over and play dead. Later he told me he'd found a pair of lumpies sitting next to each other, but by the time I got there they had moved on. No biggie ... they're "just lumpies" ... that little puppyfish was just too cute to pass by.

On our way in we got buzzed by a school of squid. They came at us like X-wing fighters outta the old Star Wars movie ... fast and hard out of the darkness. A couple of them literally slammed into my camera and light. Then ... when they realized we weren't food ... they reversed course and disappeared just as quickly as they had come in.

Imagine that much fun on a 67 minute dive ... and we never even hit 20 fsw ...

    I took over 100 pics ... kept four ...

Sounds like a great dive....can't wait to dive with you next week! Isn't it great what the old mudhole can bring in?

Took Lynne and Peter out to the lumpie field tonight. Not that it's getting repetitious or anything, but a month ago I would never have imagined that, as we're heading back in from the dive I look down at this colorful little aquatic bumblebee buzzing around in the eel grass and think to myself "Oh ... another lumpsucker" ... and keep swimming.

At any rate, we did find quite a few this evening ... as well as more than average squidlings. I may be the lumpsucker whisperer ... but Lynne proved to be the squid queen this evening. They simply found her fascinating.

Some "keepers" from the evening's dive ...
