Just beginning this month I have started tracking my caloric intake via myplate.com/livestrong. It is very interesting to see how logging things will effect habit. As it turns out my caloric intake is a lot less than I may have guessed. Now I just want to pick up the cardio so I can help all that out. For some reason though 10 and 11 hour work days are cutting into that. Yuck!
I think you guys are way over thinking this thing, if it was worth all this heavy brainiac thought, Tobin would be on here. Go diving. -- AzTek Diver

I had the same problem. Not enough calories. I now eat paleo and eat whenever I get hungry. Putting olive oil on everything and drinking lots of milk has helped to fill in my calorie gaps. Just make sure you are eating good food sources to bump up your calories, stay away from high glycemic foods and heavily processed foods.

    Hey Michael,

How are you doing? Hanging in there? You started this so I'm going to keep an eye on you now :-)

I'm down 8.4lbs after 4 solid weeks of diet & exercise. I only lost 0.6 lbs last week but I'm still on track with my goal of losing an average of 2 lbs/week.

Now only if I can keep this up another 4 months or so I'll be where I want to be!

    Cheers,
    Ross

Just got off the cruise ship Saturday and took an unannounced flight to Baltimore Maryland.

I'll weigh again in the morning but, I was an even 300lbs today when I got off the plane. I was on vacation so I didn't eat pure Paleo. I stayed away from most breads and potatoes. I did however eat plenty of deserts.

I had my body fat percentage calculated while on the ship. At rest, I burn 2954 calories a day. I'm at 28% body fat and I "should be" at 17%. I'll get the rest of the info tomorrow and post it.

    Thanks all.

So, I didn't come back "tomorrow" with more info. Stupid to trust a cruise ship's fat calculator.

Anyways, I'm doing well. I'm holding steady at 293lbs and working now toward 285lbs in a friendly comp with a buddy. I'm eating anywhere from 2500 to 3500 calories a day. Depending on what day it is. I'm going to go stricter soon and get the weight to drop a little more.

I've been doing a lot of cardio and strength training. I've dove off (:P) into strength training for my hand as well. I've posted a lot of videos over at YouTube if anyone wants to check them out. For those of you that' seen me in pictures and videos before, tell me if it looks like I've lost weight.

    Hi Michael,

I'm making good progress in 2009! It's been a crazy last 4 months dealing with 50% business travel, tough economy, a 1.5 year old baby, and the death of a loved one, but I've kept my focus on fitness through all of it. I figure that if I've made it this far nothing will stop me!

Here's my progress as of this AM (Mon morning weigh ins)

I'm down 21 lbs. I started in size 42 jeans. I just put my old 38's on today. My wife makes fun of me - she says they're "country tight". I told her I was going to get a big belt buckle and start line dancing. I'm on my 2nd smaller belt. I took a TON of clothes to Good Will yesterday since I have no plans of ever needing them again.

It's no big deal to jog for an hour or rollerblade for 2 hours now. I haven't been strength training much but I'm about to start hitting the weights again. I want to be able to bench 225 10X while weighing less than 225.

I plan to get to 210 sometime around fall and then try to keep it there for the next 50 years or so.

We both have some good momentum. Let's keep it up!

    Cheers,
    Ross-O

Wow! Congrats! Sounds like you've been putting forth more effort than what I have.

Doing body weight presses are a good sign of strength. Most people can't do 50%.

I'm glad to see you doing so well, keep it up and we'll keep it going.

Penny and I started doing lightly scaled CrossFit in January, then joined an affiliate for about 6 weeks to learn the movements better (neither of us have any powerlifting or Oly weightlifting in our background). At that time, we were making Paleo-type food choices, and then shifted more toward the Zone Diet (with a Paleo bent) in March.

We mostly do our CrossFit-style workouts at home now since we've built up enough equipment, but after a visit with Coach Izzy while we were on vacation, we decided to join a local Olympic weightllifting club in the Cincinnati area. Since the Clean & Jerk and Snatch are more technical in nature, it's nice to learn them in more depth than most CrossFit trainers are capable of.

The past 6 months have been a great deal of fun, and we've blogged most of it in our Fitness Blog or Outdoor Activity Blog. Our diet is still mostly Zone/Paleo, but we only measure periodically now, and I tend to eat more protein after heavy lift days. We've seen some some weight loss, but I don't put much emphasis on it. The metrics we're focused on are PR's for things like higher deadlift/squat numbers and faster rowing times across various distances (250m to 5000m), and better quality of life. So far it's working for us.

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Guys,

I'm still at it! My revised goal is to make 210 by my birthday on Aug 14. I'm now smaller at any time since about 1995! I was 205 when I met my wife. I'm going to stay focused on 210 for the moment but if I can make that goal I think my final goal will be to get under 200 and start to add muscle.

All of this has been done with lessons learned from a few weeks of Weight Watchers classes in 2003. I exercise a bit but some weeks I get no exercise. What I've found is that exercise ensures a 2lb/week loss while eating right alone usually gives me a 1lb week. Note that occasionally my body freaks out and decides to hang on to the fat or even add a lb every month or so. Then it realizes that everything is OK and starts dropping again. This is the 3rd time I've charted weight loss since 2003 and it does the same thing every time.

My main problem is that I'm eating the same stuff OVER and OVER. I need help with low fat, high fiber, low cal options. I'll start a new food post about staples. I still need to learn a lot about food choices and I want to learn more about eating veggies (other than the ones in cans or in my salads).

    Cheers,
    Ross-O

Thanks for sharing your progress Ross and congratulations on keeping to your schedule.

I had a setback when I moved earlier this year, (discovering I had hundreds of Avocados in my new yard did not help either )but got back on the "horse" two months ago and hope to hit my goal by my birthday next year as well. At first I was dropping nearly a pound each day, so I increased my food intake to slow it down to a point closer to what my new habits should be. Yesterday I hit the last notch on my belt for the first time ... today I tucked my shirt in, but the end (pun intended) is in sight. I have not decided on a goal, but it will be somewhere between 175-210. I'm also logging food intake and exercise, but am finding the food restriction easier than the activity increase, especially with my decline in diving this year :( Looking forward to being half the man I was though

Oh, I'd be in heaven! I love avocados, but those little suckers are expensive.

here's the first batch I picked ... 76 avocados ... took 10 minutes and I had to quit because it was getting dark. We harvested nearly 400 avocado from the tree during the next 2 months, and before they were all picked buds were forming for the next batch ... which are now ready for picking ... this is an incredible tree!

First batch of guacamole I made was 2 gallons!

    Aloha, Tim

I've found baby spinach leaves to be quite versatile, either as a salad item, or under a hot bed of pasta or with a nice juicy steak on top. They give a lot of bulk with very few calories and can be combined with so many different hot or cold entrees.

btw - My favorite salad dressing (even when not watching calories) is also VERY low in calories:

A friend gave this recipe to my Mom, who then reduced the oil and exchanged splenda for sugar - it's called "Ono Dressing" (ono in Hawaiian means good or tasty)

    18 calories per Tablespoon

    1/4 cup oil
    3/4 cup water
    1/2 cup splenda
    2.5 tsp salt
    1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
    1/2 tsp prepared mustard
    1 bay leaf
    1/4 tsp black pepper
    1 clove garlic
    1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    few slices of onion
    place in blender and mix

    makes 2 cups total

I've used this for making salads, over fish, even as a coleslaw dressing it's good.

    Aloha, Tim
