Default Andrea Doria July 2009 with TDL

Tech Diving Limited / Scuba Training and Technology Inc. will hold a special charter to the wreck of the Andrea Doria aboard the M/V John Jack dive vessel. This is a 4 day trip that sails from Montauk, NY. Includes all meals, beverages, sleeping bunk and air top ups.

Join famed wreck divers and expedition leaders Joel Silverstein and Capt.Gary Gilligan aboard the M/V John Jack for an exclusive 4-day trip to the Mount Everest of Shipwreck Dives .... the Andrea Doria.

The Andrea Doria sits in 235 fsw in one of the most treacherous areas of the shipping lanes off the coast of Nantucket. She sank after a collision with the Stockholm in 1956 becoming the most famous shipwreck of our time next to the Titanic. For more than 50 years hearty divers have been visiting this site which has been the subject of more than six books, hundreds of articles and has made more than a few divers famous in their own right. The Andrea Doria was the proving grounds for early technical diving and is still the “Mount Everest of Dives.”

    July 12-16 2009

Joel..... What would be your best guess as to the ratio of OC vs CCR divers on this trek?

    50/50 ---

I will be on CCR / OC (i bring both)
    Gilligan will be on OC
    Tie in Crew on OC
    Some crew on CCR

    I would expect clients split

Either way makes no difference to me. But CCR guys should always be able to dive OC should their unit crap out so we can put them in a set of tanks.

    Cheers

I'm thinking about it. Or, should I just do the Monitor?

How about a side trip to the Republic?

Probably cannot get on the Republic due to some issues with Martin Bailey and his arrest on it.

You should just plan to do both Monitor and Doria .....

I saw that that the info sheet mentioned that air could be filled upon request. How many will be diving air?

No, what it said was we will do air top offs. No one dives this as air anymore, and at least not on my trips.

Air tops are critical to offshore operations. Typically an OC diver will bring 3 sets of doubles with a hot mix 16/60, then follow a gas plan and then top with air to get volume for additional dives.

We do not do ANY gas mixing off-shore. As such all divers are required to bring / rent all the cylinders they will need for the dives they expect to do. This is a common and regular practice for Doria Dives.

When I dive OC on this I bring 4 sets of doubles. When I dive CCR I will also bring 2 sets of doubles, but that's me. I have to be able to dive on my trips even if hardware craps out.

For my clients that are travelling in from other parts of the world and are having us provide cylinders a strict gas plan is important. 3 sets of doubles, 3 EAN 50s 2 oxygen 40s plus surface supply. Trimix gets topped up, ean 50 gets topped to ean 35 and oxygen from surface supply is prefered, but 40 cuft bottles carried. This works and works well. I've been doing it for years for all our off-shore ops.

Rebreather divers are much easier to manage from a gas logistic purpose. a few sets of CCR bottles and some bail out.

    Hope that answers your question.

    Cheers

That makes sense. I was trying to figure out how with 8 divers X 6 dives needing 6 sets of doubles wouldn't sink the boat.

That boat wont sink from tanks. it was designed for that weight.

And its not 8 its 8 clients, 2 staff, 6 crew so its a LOT of tanks.

This is easy for us to do.

So you got your stuff and are you ready for this ?

What's the unit cost per cuft. for Helium and Oxygen?

(btw Joel, currently shelling out $4/cf for He and $1.25/cf for the Truk Trip next week, and settled on using a 20/20 mix to 54m/180' @30min BT for two wrecks on separate days to keep costs reasonable).

It's those pre-filled tank logistics that's a big pain for Doria Trips; I'm used to having all element gases supplied on a liveaboard for a deep dive expedition, and then blending the requisite minimum number of doubles & deco tanks for the total complement of divers aboard.
