Default Going to Thailand in Feb for 2 weeks

I will be there for business so I will probably only have 1 weekend to go dive, I don't know yet where I will be exactly, but looking for suggestions on places to dive. OK and suggestions on where to go in general... Robert, I don't need you telling me where to go

Kim and Compudude both have trip reports in the Thailand section that might give you some ideas . . . And they have gorgeous pictures, too.

Thailand's a big place, and not all of it is on the ocean. Where are you going to be?

Oh, and I hate you. :P

I asked today where they are going to send me, but its Friday and hell if I can remember where they said. They think its about 2 hours north of Bangkok, looking at a map, Phichit sounds familiar. It looks like it would be quite a trek from where I will be staying to the water then back. Maybe I can extend my stay there and on the last night stay in Bangkok close to the water.

Now why can't my job send me someplace nice like that?

    I so need to relocate...

Looking forward to the trip report though!

    Oh...hate you too. :P

I would suggest diving anywhere but Pattaya. Beyond that, if it were me I would take a flight to Phuket, and dive Hin Daeng, Hin Muang.

I just received a reply to an email I sent to a dive shop in Phuket, they said I should fly to them and spend two days if not "nearest...would be Pattaya, you can get there by bus..."
that doesn't sound so hot. What's wrong with Pattaya?

The diving in Pattaya is not very good -- the vis is bad and there is not much to see. Diving there can be like diving in a snow storm -- the vis can be that bad. As far as the surface goes, neither Pattaya nor its beaches are very scenic. In short, everything is better elsewhere. However, if you only have time to go to Pattaya, it will be a different experience.

I've heard similar reports about Pattaya... that it's really not very good.

That said, what a local Thai diver who prefers to spend time in Phuket considers "not very good" and what a SoCal diver looking for some warm water wet action considers "not good enough to bother with" may or may not be the same thing. I have my doubts. If nothing else, I figure it can't be worse than Vets on a mediochre evening, and at least it's warm! Considering it may be the best shot, given your likely time constraints, I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

I say this while recalling what it was like to have a perma-grin on my face after diving a local Phuket site, and hearing one of the boat's DMs complain about how bad it was, just because the diving in the Similans (top 10 world dive destination) was so much better. Good is relative term.

I have been to the Similans, dived the sites nearby Phuket, and have dived Pattaya. I would rather dive off California, any day, but that's just me. Pattaya is kind of like beach diving under fair to poor conditions -- at least that's what we encountered. I heard all the reports about it, but I had to see for myself.
