Thread: FIRST LOOK: DUI Offers Another 400 G Thinsulate - Making Good Even Better!

  1. #1

Thumbs up FIRST LOOK: DUI Offers Another 400 G Thinsulate - Making Good Even Better!

DUI (www.dui-online.com) has had a 400g Thinsulate undergarment (what they call "dive wear) in their line for a long time. Its undergone some re-designs and some improvements over the years, but this latest addition - the XM-450, represents the most significant improvement for this, their warmest undergarment.

Anyone who's had and dived the original (and even its more recent cousins) DUI 400g knows there are certain properties to the undies that you just deal with. It does not stretch, so there is the bustle butt - that poof of excess fabric in the lower back that is quite unflattering when walking about with your drysuit off and kinda tough to jam into a really close-fitting suit. It needs to be there so you can reach over your head, but the extra fabric was an inelegant solution.

Second, there are the arms and legs - they're not tapered in proportion to the arms and legs on the DUI suits - which can give a puddle of Thinsulate sitting on the top of your boot or at the middle of your forearm.

    DUI has heard us!

The new XM-450 (XM standing for Extra Mobility) has strategically placed Polartec panels that make this the most mobile and most suit-friendly DUI 400 G yet. The panel on the back eliminates the need for the extra fabric - no more bustle butt. There are also panels on the arms and legs, making it much easier to kick, reach and generally move in the undergarment.

Also - the arms and legs have been thoughtfully tapered to make it easier to don, and to get the thinsulate where you need it - all the way to your ankles and wrists.

The XM-450 has a rugged nylon spray guard on the outside, zippered pockets and a collar that is soft enough to get out of the way of a neoprene neck seal.

These are very nice improvements to DUI's warmest undergarment, making it more diveable and better fitting.

Be sure to see the new DUI XM-450 when you get a chance. It should start shipping right after the show.

Cool. It looks like they finally listened to us.

I can't wait to try one on.
Today I went to look at Drysuits... and came home with a tube of Aquaseal :(

I was one of the test divers for this new undergarment. It's a nice undersuit, stretchy, warm however when you flood it, as I did, you will know where the different materials are.

Looks really nice. Hopefully there will be a 200 version of it for warmer waters ... My DUI 200 has seen better days

Is this washable or does it come with endless supply of enzymatic spray to keep odors at bay?

They said washable in cold water, they mentioned Woolite, but mine's going to have to be pretty rank before I wash it. Fabreeze is your friend.

drysuit underwear is a consumable. It won't last forever... I'll wash mine before it gets too stinky... woolite, cold water, and delicate. Course I dive with long johns and wear deodorant so unless I flood or have a blowout things don't get that stinky... One of the benni's of a temperate climate

I foresee pain and suffering coming when its time to poke a button hole in it for my pee-tube though not quite as bad as the CF200, but surely not without a bit of "oh man oh man here goes nuttin'" (nicer to just have a hole in the right place as opposed to keeping your lower zipper partially undone for the tube)

Well, that is great, the temperate climate, makes a big difference while suiting up.

Down here in Paradise (cave country) it means we perspire a lot prior to getting in the water and the undergarments, what is the delicate way to put it?, tend to develop offensive aromas...

Used to have a Thinsulate 200 but the sucker ended up developing "thin" areas and I shucked it in favor for the 4th Element stuff which is washable and keeps me warm even when wet, last a lot longer too....

I did have a set of the Thinsulate 400 g but felt like Mr Bim (the Michelin Man) and had a hard time reaching anything over my head. Sold it after 5 dives....

Hopefully this newer version will be more amenable to flexibility.

And yes, we do use deodorant down here too, just in case you were wondering..

BTW, Febreeze reeks too, I use Petzyme, less expensive than the Mirazime from McNett and you can buy by the gallon at Petsmart...

    Dive safe,

I was going to ask if you can buy it in industrial size containers like your Sink the Stink.

Well Charles, the truth is I have not tried to make purchases in more than 1 gal containers, but I am sure that it can be done.

The Sink THe Stink gallon I bought years ago has lasted that long (over 6-8 years), I reserve it for student gear and whenever it is needed.

    Dive safe,

    Celia

PS When are you guys diving again? (caves, that is)

Yes, the problems with washing Thinsulate are part of the reason I really like the White's MK3. The fake down/Weezle type filling is much more durable with washing. I don't sweat that much into an undergarment (although I'm sure Mexico will be an eye-opener in that respect) but I have this tendency to dry suit leaks, and the salt water gets crusty.
