Any operator recommendations for doing a couple of Tech 1 level dives on the Oriskany on a single trip?
Two of us are prepared to go on a mixed tech-rec trip if we can find one, but if there's enough demand to charter a six-pack, that's even better.

I've casually looked at MBT in Pensacola and Gulf Divers in Orange Beach Alabama so far, for potential future trips to dive the Oriskany. . .
Still thinking about logistics issues: Fly out but air cargo my tech gear ahead or rent doubles & deco bottles over there; or a fun month-long road trip/vacation from Los Angeles to Pensacola FL in my rickety '99 Ford Explorer with all my stuff. . .

I would recommend Dive Pros in Pensacola (my "home " shop). We have a haskel, charge by the cuft, and can mix anything you want. So far as I know no one in town rents doubles/ deco bottles- but if you know someone.... you might be able to borrow.... I'm just sayin....
As far as boats go:
YKnot? http://www.bluwateradventures.com gets my business. Capt. Dave is great, the boat is fast.
Daisy D http://www.southeroffshoreadventures.com is good as well. Capt. Jeff will take good care of you.
I hate cattle boats, so I can't say anything positive about any of the Newtons running out there... the fact that they hold more than 6 is a negative in my book.

Where's a good inexpensive place to stay with good eateries nearby; what do you recommend for accommodations Heather?

If you're coming to Pensacola you simply have to eat at McGuire's Irish Pub and Fish House. Both are downtown near Seville Harbor which, conveniently, is where the Y-Knot's slip is.
Since I live there, I must confess I don't know much about Pensacola hotel rates. But I can tell you there's a Residence Inn that's also right down by Seville Harbor and there are also several hotels up by the airport and a Ramada right by the freeway. I would be willing to bet that a hotel in Pensacola will be far cheaper than a hotel in Gulf Breeze or out on Pensacola Beach.

Okay cool thanks. . .!
I originally planned to take Amtrak's Sunset Limited from Los Angeles to Pensacola --until I found out that the track from New Orleans to Jacksonville is still not open to passenger traffic --freight only, and in sections only 30mph max-- post Hurricane Katrina 2005!. . .

It would be a bit of a drive, but doubles and deco bottles could be rented from Cave Adventurers. Edd is located in Marianna, about a 2-2.5 hour drive from Pensacola, but he has several rentals available. Besides a 2 hour drive in a rental car is definitely better and cheaper than a cross country trip! And you can check out one of the most beautiful caverns around while you're there.

We take our boat out to the Oriskany for tech dives twice a year. We're always looking for people to join us to help pay for the fuel. Let me know if you're interested. We are there July 14-16 and Aug 11-13 2009

Don't forget a visit to Florabama while you're there, assuming it's still there of course.
It's been a loooong time since my days at Milton/Pcola.
But the memories of the husband hunters are always there.
Cometo thi k of it so are the Tail hook memories; maybe there was a theme to my younger days....

You must link me on http://maps.google.com. I'll be down there the 29th and 30th for boat dives. I want to eat there and I might just wear my kilt.![]()
