Just thought I'd pass along an exciting job opportunity with Reef Check California. If you're not familiar with Reef Check California, in a nutshell, we have teams of volunteer divers statewide (currently over 200 divers from San Diego to Humboldt County) who are using standardized protocols to monitor their local rocky reefs. This scientifically sound data is then passed along to resource managers so they can use it to make management decisions. We have trainings all around the state in the spring/early summer and we survey over 50 sites in the spring and fall. These numbers - both number of volunteers and number of sites - will grow in 2008 so we need some additional help organizing our volunteers and surveys.

This job is a 20 hour/week position based in the Los Angeles region. It might be the perfect opportunity for a graduate student or someone who wants a part time job. JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Volunteer Coordinator – Los Angeles Region
Reef Check California Program

The Reef Check Foundation seeks a Volunteer Coordinator to facilitate the implementation and growth of the Reef Check California (RCCA) Program in Southern California, primarily in the Los Angeles region. The Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with the RCCA Southern California Regional Program Manager, the Director and Headquarters staff.

The Volunteer Coordinator will organize trained volunteers to conduct survey dives, ensure survey teams are equipped with datasheets and survey gear and assist teams with data entry and submission. This position will require periodic travel out of the region and work on weekends.

Specific duties:
Ø Organize and conduct field surveys (primarily May – November)
Ø Assist with RCCA training classes (scheduling, classroom, pool and field)
Ø Maintain and prepare sampling gear/supplies (printing data sheets, distributing materials to survey teams)
Ø Outreach activities (dive club presentations, tabling events, etc)
Ø Regular communication with divers through postings on the RCCA web forum and direct communication with volunteer divers

This part time position is based out of a home office and occasionally at Reef Check Headquarters in Pacific Palisades. The candidate must be organized and capable of working independently. Successful candidates must have a strong work ethic coupled with a high level of self-motivation and enthusiasm. Applicants will need to have their own computer.

Significant Southern California diving experience, strong diving skills and previous scientific diving experience or RCCA certification are required. Professional dive leader (Instructor or Divemaster) and Scientific Diver certification (AAUS or equivalent) preferred. Applicants must have their own dive gear (excluding tanks) in working order.

This is a part time position (20 hours per week) at $20 per hour with 6 month contract and possibility of extension. Review of applicants will commence on March 10, 2008.
