Thread: Ventura County Coastal Offshore Reefs (aka-Deep Hole area)

  1. #1

Default Ventura County Coastal Offshore Reefs (aka-Deep Hole area)

Channel Islands Dive Adventures has the Explorer chartered for a trip to the Deep Hole area of Ventura County on Sunday, August 5, 2012. Diving the Deep Hole area can be very exciting as it is not a place where many divers get to dive. There are very few chances to dive the coastal areas andCIDA is the leader in coastal diving!
The plan is to board at 7:00am Sunday morning (or after 7:00pm on Saturday night) and depart at 8:00am for a nice ride to the Deep Hole area of Ventura County located about 20 miles south of Ventura Harbor and ½-1 mile offshore. We will be doing all 3 dives in the same general area with us getting back to the dock about 5:00pm. The 1st dive will be about 60’-90’ deep and the 2nd and 3rd dives will be about 40’-70’ deep.
The Deep Hole area is large and very dramatic and is comprised of large boulders, small rock piles, walls and pinnacles along with beautiful kelp forests, sea fans, bat rays and more. There are deeper sites such as Sea Fans, Deep Hole, Painted Rocks and Sweet Spot and there is a shallow (40’-60’) spot called “The Ring” with its rocky reef and kelp forest that can rival any spot on the islands on a good day. The depths range from 40’-100’ with visibility from 20’-60’. This can be a very good hunting spot for fish and bugs (when its bug season) and an excellent area for photographers.

    Can't wait!!

I know this is going to be ANOTHER excellent off-the-beaten-path trip full o' surprising fun.

Amidst all these glorious reefs there's just gotta be a wreck somewhere.....

Not that I have a wreck problem.
    I can stop anytime.

Every trip is fun, just some are more fun then others and wrecks always make it even that much better...not sure about one on this trip but either way it will be something new for most everyone!!!

    FUN!!!!!

    THAT was a fun day!

Thank you, Mr. Ken Off-The-Beaten-Path Kollwitz, for planning, organizing and hosting a day of rarely experienced diving.

All day long...stepping up to the gate... I looked a mile away and smiled.

It was Pacific Coast Highway, just north of County Line (LA county to Ventura County,) and I'd driven by this stretch of ocean a thousand times.... oblivious to the remarkable reefs way outside.

Today we got to casually fall through the water onto peak after peak of the Humongous "Neptune's Reef" and delight in the rich life thriving from 50 to 80fsw.

On deck we could sometimes hear a distant car horn, but everything else was far-from-ordinary.

Thanks, Ken, for getting a CIDA trip out to enjoy this. You always make every single diver feel welcome and encouraged.

Oceans full of thanks to Mo2vation, Ronnie and Chris S. for sharing the diving fun all day!

    Reports soon!

Really glad you liked Neptune's and enjoyed the day...its always a pleasure to have you and your dive buds out on a CIDA trip!

It's divers like you that give me the incentive to schedule off-the beaten-path trips like the one on Saturday. I am hoping next year to have the Peace make a trip further down the coast to explore some other cool spots and possibly checking out what Jonathan thinks is a wreck.

Thank you for all the kind words, Ken.

Did you say something about a wreck?

It was a fun trip, I'm looking forward to visiting the area again on Ken's next trip there later this year. Given the size of the reef, you could easily do a hundred dives at Neptune's and not see everything that is there.

Version 2.0 of the chart is in the works- now with a greatly increased resolution of 50 centimeters, four times sharper than the 2 meter version I brought on the boat.
