    Default Cleaning a SS plate

We took the weight plates off Peter's rig for our recent Mexico trip, and discovered significant rust staining of the plate. I'm wondering if there is anything that's safe and effective to clean the stainless steel with? I didn't want to put Naval Jelly on it without asking, because I'd hate to damage the plate or make further corrosion likely.

Brillo Pad works for simple surface stuff. A steel brush chucked into a variable speed drill works wonders on deeper corrosion.

Not the green scotchbrite... I like the reddish ones for this. Work like a charm!

Ah -- I have some phosphoric acid stuff I bought to try to get scale off the bathroom tile. I can use that!

I know this question may have sounded stupid, but I've never had a stainless steel sink . . .

Maroon scotchbrite and phosphoric acid will clean off the old rust. I'd start with fairly dilute acid first. A warm bath would make it go faster, much faster. Passivisation in 16% warm nitric acid will help it from coming back but that may be getting to be an "industrial" process. It might be better to visit the back door of your local plating shop with a crisp $20 bill in hand.
