Default Octo riding a wolf eel, for real, on video

Lauren caught an event on video that I think would otherwise be ascribed to a tall tale.

Lauren's other excellent videos are at seainggreen.com and are well worth watching if you haven't seen them.

For those who are not familiar with Puget Sound dive sites Day Island Wall (DIW) is located in the Tacoma Narrows just South of a rather infamous suspension bridge. Perhaps you have seen this video before.

There is an 8 Second ride joke in there somewhere.

So did the divers roll up and find this, or was this an assisted ride?

Doesn't matter to me. Just curious.

Wolfie wasn't too pleased at the end of the 8 seconds. And who can blame him. Octo had one arm in the saddle on Hurricane Wolfie and 7 arms in the air, going all bar room bucking bull ride.

Was this a photo op or a discovery?

It was a discovery. I asked the same question.

It came later and off film but Karen watched the wolfie get tired of it and banged into rocks to get it off, then ate it. It's all real.

Hi, Since I was one of the diver's on that dive I can answer that. We happened upon it. And the text in Laurynn's awsome video is pretty much how the discovery went. "Wow a wolf eel, followed by "what is on it's back" , followed by "holy crap an octopus"...and then video came out and also a camera and we all followed it.

Sad to say, the wolfie did end up eating the octopus. It scraped the little guy off his back by turning itself upside down and then threw ilittle octo into the air and chomped it. I swam closer and wolfie swam away leaving the carnaged octo behind. Then when I backed off, wolfie came back and finished him off.

The octopus knew he was doomed as he kept reaching out to Laurynn as she was filming and actually wrapped one arm around her blue gloved finger....but them the wolf eel took off and he held on for dear life.

And that is how it went down...not bad for my first wolf eel sighting. Loved diving in Seattle!!!

    Wow!!

    Thank goodness for video!!!

The good news: The final result should help eradicate any genetic tendencies of octopuses to ride wolf eels. That is some kind of self-destructive behavior!

    wow.

    Just wow.

As I understand it, octopus and eels are mortal enemies...
Octopus + Eel in open = dead Octopus
Octopus + Eel in crevice = dead Eel

Of course an eel that size against such a tiny octo...

Thanks for the nice words about the film! As Karen mentioned it was a totally happen-stance discovery... and went down exactly as she described. If I hadn't been there to see it myself I would not have believed it. I had never seen anything like it before and highly doubt I'll see anything like it again...

    Enjoy!

It was a freakin' cool day, that's for sure!! w000t!!

I had not seen either before, and as I backed up to let Laurynn and Kathryn get shots of other wolfies, I looked down and.... Wha??? *signal signal!!!* *Look!! There's a wolfie, right out in the open!!! Ohh... What is on his... An octo!!! Holy crap!"

It was quite an introduction to octos and wolf eels, for me!!
