Thread: Recommended Dive Charters in Monterey?

  1. #1

Default Recommended Dive Charters in Monterey?

I've got a stressful month ahead at work and will want to decompress sometime around mid November. I was thinking of heading up to Monterey for 3 or 4 days mid November. Does anyone have suggestions on dive charters/boats to use in the area? Any “must do” dives? I have not been to Monterey before, but have been to the channel islands in so cal quite a bit. So I expect it to be similar if a bit colder. Any other tips for a Monterey newbie?

All the dive boat operators are top notch.

Best shore diving is at Pt. Lobos, but you'll need a knowledgeable buddy (and reservations on the weekends).

Post here and in the NorCal subforum on SB to find a buddy (or two).

Reservations? You need reservations to shore dive? In So Cal we just gear up, wander into the water and no one seems to care too much. Not what I expected, but intriguing.

It's a state park with a limited number of "spots" available for divers. Plus, they require buddy teams.

Sure, it's a bit a of PITA, but the diving is spectacular.

Its also a national marine sanctuary. There are not many of them one can shore dive at.

There are lots of spots to shore dive in Monterey without reservations but Pt. Lobos is special because it's a reserve. Pt. Lobos is one of my top favorite places to dive - it's totally worth it.

The only boat I have been out on in Monterey is the Escapade, but I have loved it. Jim's a great captain, they use bathymetry pictures to orient you to the site, and there has been a suited up safety diver each time we have been on the boat.

+1 on Jim and the Escapade. Top notch operation.
