Thread: What the? Prescription required for P-Valve condom catheters?

  1. #1

Default What the? Prescription required for P-Valve condom catheters?

I called my local pharmacy to pick up a batch of condom catheters and was told a prescription was required. My first several came from a sample kit from Rochester (thank you Rochester).

Has anyone else encountered this requirement? I'm wondering if this is a real or just nonsense.

I buy mine in bulk on ebay. Hard to believe that would be permitted if catheters are now a "controlled substance"

(I keep my catheter script right next to my O2 script BTW)

Exactly.. Rochester sent me my first batch with no questions asked. I found an online company that I bought another box from. This just surprised me.

Ok, there's an Amazon.com store selling catheters as well. My pharm tech must have been having a bad day.

I've bought them in the story near me without issue before. No problems when ordering a box online either. Perhaps the pharmcy person was confused?

There's a host of places on line where you can buy them, and I've bought them over the counter at a handful of dive shops as well. I've never, ever heard of a prescription being required for condom catheters.

Shenanigans, I say. Methinks you need to find a new pharmacy.

Their loss in revenue. Here's where I get mine: http://www.jrsmedical.com/UROLOGICAL...1/product.aspx
I buy them by the box. I bought a box from LHB before but they stopped selling the widebands. I've had no problems with JRS caths.

No prescription needed ... there's a big jar of 'em sitting out on the counter here at the Dive Outpost ... hell, they even have a measuring tool hanging on a chain next to the jar in case you don't know what size you need (seriously ... although I have yet to see anybody use it).

Then again, they do things a bit differently down here in Florida ...

The only reason for a prescription is so they can charge an insurance company a lot more than you'd pay at any normal retail.

And Bob: not seeing anybody use it is a very, very good thing....

What Ken said. You get a lot farther with your insurance company if you have a perscription for anything.

Very likely, you just have to fill out a bunch of papers attesting that you are not in the country legally... ;-)

I think I'd check on any prescriptions filled by that pharmacy to make sure they got it right!

The only thing that I can think of is that I must have set off their suspicion meter somehow. I can't imagine how though. What trouble could someone get into with a condom cath anyway? It boggles the mind...

The trouble usually starts when you tell them you need caths in order to pursue your favorite hobby.....
