Thread the hole and just use a SS allen screw with a little loctite, easy with two hands. no pounding in or out.

I have not tried a stronger spring and you shouldn't have to, if the rod is clean and straight there's no need for a stronger spring

Over time in salt water you get small stuff up in the rod tube, making a little effort to rinse it good and squirt a little WD40 in the tube does...
